How I work
I use an approach that combines counseling and coaching. As a counselor I am focused on supporting and empowering you to make changes in a specific area of your life.
I will help you explore thoughts and behaviors that may be contributing to your problems, while emphasizing your strengths and possibilities. I will suggest new ways of behaving, thinking and believing and it’s up to you to practice these outside of the session.
We will focus on insight and understanding when it is helpful and I will assist you in taking action towards your goals and moving forward. It is a collaborative process in which I believe you are the expert on your life.
The approaches I use in counseling:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive-behavioral therapy is based on the premise that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors. More simply, how you think determines how you feel.
The goal of cognitive behavioral interventions is to challenge and ultimately change self-defeating thoughts and beliefs to allow the client to lead a more productive and satisfying life. Cognitive strategies have been shown to be especially effective in the treatment of anxiety and depression.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy is evidence-based, which means that it is supported by research that proves that it is effective in helping people make emotional and behavioral changes.
Family Systems Theory
The family systems theory is a theory introduced by Dr. Murray Bowen that suggests that individuals cannot be understood in isolation from one another, but rather as a part of their family. Families are systems of interconnected and interdependent individuals, none of whom can be understood in isolation from the system.
Within the boundaries of the system, patterns develop as certain family member's behavior is caused by and causes other family member's behaviors in predictable ways. Maintaining the same pattern of behaviors within a system may lead to balance in the family system, but also to dysfunction.
Solution Focused Therapy
Solution Focused therapy focuses less on the problem and more on the possibilities and solutions. This approach identifies your existing strengths and resources and uses these strengths to create solutions.
